INDIAN NETWORK ON CULTURAL AND BIOLOGICAL DIVERSITY
Indian Network on Cultural and Biological Diversity (INCBD) is participating in the Launch of the UN Decade on Biodiversity (UNDB) for Asia and commencement of preparations for India’s hosting of  COP-11 to the CBD, in New Delhi on 23rd May, 2011 at 4:00 pm.

Indian Network on Cultural and Biological Diversity (INCBD) was established by the group of Likeminded people and organizations committed to Conservation and sustainable management of Cultural and Biological Resources for future generations. The Indian Network desires to pursue Biodiversity Conservation, capacity building and enhancing awareness through education, linking stakeholders with policy agenda, planning and implementation of the multi level agreements. INCBD is collaborating with the International University Network on Cultural and Biological Diversity (IUNCBD) focused on developing countries and promoted by Sapienza University of Rome under the cooperation agreement recently signed with the UN Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity. The Indian Network aims to implement the Communication, Education and Public Awareness  programme (CEPA) of  Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) Secretariat.
The Network invites interested institutions and individual members working in the different Agro climatic and eco climatic zones in India to participate in the initiatives aimed at achieving the objectives of CBD. The Network strives to achieve the vision -“By 2050, living in harmony with nature, biodiversity is valued, conserved, restored and wisely used, maintaining ecosystem services, sustaining a healthy planet and delivering benefits essential for all people.”   
India being a Mega Biodiversity country, became a signatory to the CBD on 29.12.1993 to conserve the Biological Resources and ensure Biological prospecting for its development.
The Network partners include Universities, ICAR , ICFRE, IITs, IISc, Research Institutions, Central and State Government Departments, NGOs, Academia, Students, Farmers, Communities,  Hakims, Vaids, herbal healers, Biodiversity Management Committees, Social activists, benefit claimers, Creators and holders of traditional knowledge and cultural practices etc.,  
This network is guided by Dr. M.S. Swaminathan, Honorary Chairman, INCBD.
INCBD Objectives:
  1. Prevent the further loss of Cultural and Biological Diversity so as to secure its ethical, cultural, spiritual, social, environmental and economic values. 
  2. To ensure conservation of biodiversity and continuity of its benefits to the Society through sustainable use of its components and fair and equitable sharing of benefits arising from the utilization of Biological resources. 
  3. Promoting cooperation between all Network partners to share information on Biodiversity. 
  4. To fully translate Global and National agenda on Access and Benefit Sharing of Biological Resources and associated traditional knowledge with the involvement of concerned stakeholders.
  5.  Integrating the biodiversity conservation and the cross sectoral plans. 
  6. Prioritizing the Biodiversity concerns into actions from the policies and programmes of the National, Regional and Local institutions. 
  7. Supporting Networks, Institutions and Individuals in the Capacity Building activities aimed to improve Knowledge, Attitudes and Skills related to Biodiversity issues.
  8. Working towards total prevention of Bio piracy.
  9. Documentation of oral traditional knowledge to conserve the Cultural and Biological Diversity.
  10. To build synergy amongst the conservers of biological resources and its by products, creators, holders of knowledge and information relating to the use of such biological resources, innovations, practices and IPR applications.
  11. Realizing the dream of “Developed India through the Growth Engine of Biological Prospecting and the rich Indian cultural heritage”.
INCBD through its network partners will organize a series of events inviting the stakeholders for a consultative process to prepare a roadmap for achieving its objectives. The Network appointed the Regional coordinators to cover cross functional issues such as Climate Change, Gender, Traditional Knowledge and Livelihoods with reference to various Ecosystems and to strengthen the network activities in the respective zones.
